Stake holder value is an essential part of systems thinking and lean management. Clearly the purpose of teh system should be at the heart of any improvement attempt. Womack and Jones translated "purpose" as "customer value". You may challenge this. What about the voice of the society or the voice of the other stake holders (such as share holders). Businesses that I work with take customer value very serious. They are begining to take voice of teh society very serious too! That's why Lean and Green is an emerging term. Peter Hines, John Seddon and John SHook are amongst those who have written a lot about the importance of understanding and paying due attention to stake holder value. Its not an easy concept. For example in supply chains we mapped 35 end-to-end supply chains in retail industry with big players only to find out, nearly 83% have serious issues in terms mis-alignment of processes with the voice of the customer. Obviously, once you include wider stakeholders, the problem is more complex and more dynamic.
